Back when I was in high school, a recruiter kept calling me. I bet I spoke to him four times on the phone during my senior year. If I had joined (my Mom thought it was a great opportunity to get out of our little town and see the world) there's a good chance I would have served in the first Gulf War. The war that I safely watched on my TV.

What the Recruiter Never Told You
Most of my knowledge of military life is from the movie "Full Metal Jacket" and actor and real-life drill instructor R. Lee Ermey screaming at everyone and saying the most awful things. It was like I was in the service. Except with popcorn and a soda. I also picked up a line I use my with my friends: "To me, you are all equally worthless!"

Before Your Spouse Deploys
I cannot imagine having to leave behind a family when being shipped off overseas. Especially now with all the conflicts our country is involved in. Kim Wilson, our Guide to Military Families, suggests you keep a steady head and get organized.

Wars & Battles Throughout History
Battle of Salamis? Raid on Son Tay? Battle of Arsuf? There's clearly a lot I need to read up on. Also, as a species, we fight way too often.

Getting Back to Work
Fortunately, our government has a lot of programs that benefit veterans. One of the latest is tax break for companies when they hire veterans. But there's much to be done (see below).
