Full disclosure: I haven't read Hunger Games. Or seen the movie. I have acted out a version of it involving the clock striking 3:30pm and an office printer that seemed somewhat ominous (it was making noise). Luckily I proved triumphant over my hunger games with a dollar bill and a Snickers. Bob: 1, Hunger Games: 0.

Movie Review: The Hunger Games
After reading Rebecca's review I'm not sure I'm ready to see "The Hunger Games." It sounds pretty intense, but if your tween/teen has already read it then good luck keeping 'em away. (Frankly, I'm really glad my daughter is not only too young to read it, but also prefers princesses and the happy kind of fairy tales.)

Book Review: 1984
Here's how old I am: I read "1984" in high school. In 1984. Ms. Rice, my lit teacher, made a big deal about it, but it gave me nightmares--even when I reread it as an adult. Every time I picked up the newspaper I'd be like, "Gah! It's coming true." Once you and your teen read that one you can check out these related articles.

More Dystopian Novels
If you enjoyed "1984," check out Esther's list of books you might also enjoy. I do have to ask her why my all-time favorite "Ender's Game" isn't on the list. It's so great. Here are a couple of other resources, too.

Book Review: Unwind
I guess I'll get up to speed on some of these books once my daughter gets a little older and her reading list expands but, wow, this book sounds great. I absolutely love reading about messed up ideas that--for a change--I didn't come up with myself.
