From Beth Lewis, your Guide to Elementary Education
I loved learning and teaching cursive, so it strikes an emotional chord in me to hear that this elegant handwriting skill may be going the way of the abacus. What do you think? ~Beth

Is Cursive an Antiquated Skill?
Many of us remember our third grade teachers patiently teaching us how to write in cursive, how to make loops and connect letters with care and precision. My third grade students consistently show up on the first day of school gushing with enthusiasm over "getting" to learn cursive in the coming school year. It was like they had been waiting to learn this mysterious grown-up skill since kindergarten! I was happy to capitalize on their excitement and interest.

That's why it's refreshing to read the detailed and thoughtful views of Nancy Flanagan, a 30-year classroom veteran. She addresses class size, unions, teacher quality, and whether the opinions of Bill Gates (a non-teacher) should matter, an issue that has certainly been divisive around here.

Does Ms. Flanagan speak for you? Does she gain extra credence due to her experience in the classroom?... Read more
