Comment of the Week: Cursive and Special Education
Last week, we discussed whether cursive handwriting should go the way of the abacus. Many schools are opting not to teach students how to write in cursive any more because typing is far more prevalent nowadays. Is it an antiquated waste of time or an important skill to teach? The jury was split in our comments section, but one educator pointed out something I hadn't considered previously:

...the use of cursive writing although it takes a bit of time is an effective therapy that helps with brain neuron re-construction. It also helps in the process of memory recall and reasoning. Think about the subtle movements in martial arts [then] think [about] cursive writing [and] you will see a pattern; this quiets the mind [which is] good for classroom management, too.

So, cursive writing can be an important cognitive tool for special education students. I'm partial to cursive, so I hope it can still find a place in our elementary school curriculum.... Read more
