| | From Bob Schulties, your About Today Editor When I was a kid, outdoor activities meant playing army with whatever could pass for guns, kickball in the street, and riding our bikes over what were (in hindsight) insanely busy roads. Essentially, it went like this: Mom opened the screen door and told me to come home for supper (in the summer, the instruction was to come home when the 9 o'clock whistle sounded).Nowadays, everything is scheduled, structured and supervised. | | Starting the Fun Young When I read articles like this, I get all worked up and think, "Bah! I did my teen years wrong! I need a reboot." But of course, I wouldn't relive my teen years for a million dollars. Well, maybe a million. Are we negotiating here, or is your offer not really valid? | The Best Picnic Food I'm having a hard time remembering the number of times we picnicked as a family. I know we picnicked in Echo Lake Park near where I grew up. Mom made the standard fare: fried chicken cutlets and potato salad. And it was the best. | Ways to Play Outside My family didn't go geocaching or skating or horseback riding. In fact, I think picnicking was the extent of our outdoor activities as a family. And, you know, if you're gonna just go with one activity, I totally vote for the picnic: Good food? Check. Outside? Check. Laying down while eating outside? Check. I may picnic slightly differently than you. | Random Idea Time: L'Ardia di San Costantino Not to toot our own horn, but one of the things I love about our writers is the totally random things I'd never think of on my own. Like this: Sardinian Horse Racing with a Spiritual Twist. And, no, it's not particularly active on your part, but it is outside. Oh, and get ready for this: There's suckling pig afterwards. I swear if I find out there's a blanket there for me to lay down on... I'm booking that plane ticket pronto. | | | | Today Ads | | | | Featured Articles | | | | | | Sign up for more free newsletters on your favorite topics | | | | You are receiving this newsletter because you subscribed to the About Today newsletter.
