From Allen Grove, your Guide to College Admissions: U.S.

If you're applying to a highly selective college or university, chances are you'll be using the Common Application. This week's newsletter focuses on some of the application's more challenging sections. You'll also find information on extracurricular activities.

This past week I visited the campuses of 27 colleges in Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina. Look for new photo tours in the coming weeks.

The Personal Essay

The length and subject requirements for the Common Application's personal essay will remain unchanged for the 2012 - 2013 application cycle. Check out the tips and samples for each of the six essay options.

The Short Answer

The Common Application asks all applicants to elaborate on one of their extracurricular activities or work experiences. Make sure your short answer shines by following these six short answer tips. You'll also find links to sample short answers. Be careful to avoid these short answer mistakes.

Supplemental Essays

The Common Application isn't truly "common" for all colleges. The majority of highly selective colleges also require a unique Common Application supplement. Be sure to avoid these supplemental essay mistakes, and check out these sample supplemental essays.

Extracurricular Activities

If you're like most applicants, you worry that you don't have enough extracurricular activities to impress college admissions officers. Rarely is this the case. Be sure to think broadly about what counts as an extracurricular activity.
