About Today: Coping With Chronic Illness

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Bob Schulties, your About Today Editor
It's one thing to get sick and get better, but it's another thing to get sick and then have to learn to live with it. The only chronic thing I have doesn't count: Bad Attituditis.

What Is Fibromyalgia?
I'm a little embarrassed to say that I wasn't quite sure what fibromyalgia was. And since you can't hear me, I can say it any way I want, although, to be honest, I'm not even 100 percent sure how to pronounce it. Fibromyalgia sounds pretty miserable, and I feel for you or anyone you know who suffers from it. But if you're in the dark like me, that link above offers a little learning as to what it's all about.

Do You Think You Have Arthritis?
Wow, looks like I'm getting all sorts of schooling today! Arthritis is actually a group of over 100 conditions? How come I haven't learned this before? Do you suspect you have an arthritic condition? Here's what to do first.

Will You Get Heart Disease?
I know this'll sound a little morbid, but I reckon I'll die from either cancer or heart disease. And it scares me so much that I've taken up bull fighting, skydiving and crocodile taming to ward them off. Foolproof plan? Check. Fool? Check. Wait, what?

Lots To Eat On a Gluten-Free Diet
I don't want to get all dramatic, but if I wasn't able to eat pizza and bread, I'd probably just let the crocodile eat me after my parachute failed to open (see above). "But wait!" says Jane, our Guide to Celiac Disease. There is actually plenty you can eat. Oh, great. Anyone know a way out of a crocodile?

About Today: Life in Ancient Times

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Bob Schulties, your About Today Editor
I feel like no matter what I do, life is going too quickly. I wonder if folks from the past felt the same way. I mean, what if we transported an ancient Roman to the present day -- would they help slow us down, or would they be like, "Quis est is iPad?" and "Qua est meus geminus mocha Chai latte? EGO have a yoga dictata."

Roman Meals
N.S. Gill, our Guide to Ancient/Classical History, writes, "...even most rich Romans would have eaten more modestly." Oh, no! My ideas about ancient Roman feasts are somewhat wrong? Makes me wonder what Romans would have thought of our tailgate parties.

Roman Wines
I can't be the only one who thinks of enormous vessels of wine when thinking about Roman times.

Roman Aqueducts
This, along with the wine, is what I typically think about when I think about the Romans. There were nine aqueducts and one was nearly 60 miles long? Man, that's even more impressive than I originally thought.

Roman Society
Here's a great overview of how Roman society functioned. I guess it wasn't all togas and food fights. Wait, that was Animal House. Good ol' Bluto.

About Today: It's Hotter Than Hot

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Bob Schulties, your About Today Editor
I often get email (feel free to write to me anytime). Let me share one with you now. "Dear Dr. Bob, How can I beat the heat? Signed, Too Hot in Tulsa."

Simple answer: a kiddie pool and a big electric fan. Frosty beverage of choice is (barely) optional. Tip: Keep the fan away from the pool and the kids away from me. I mean you.

Take Your Kids Out of the Car
Let me remove my smart-aleck cap for a minute: When you arrive at your destination after going out for a drive, take your children out of the car. It simply breaks my heart every year to read the stories about children being left (often accidentally) in cars.

Beat the Heat
Our Guide to First Aid, Rod, reminds us to stay out of the heat and sun. Since that's not always possible, he also shares other smart tips, like: Call in sick to work and hide in the tub, break into your neighbor's house if they have colder AC than you, and he even supports bringing your lawn sprinkler to work. It's possible I made up some (or all) of those suggestions.

A Pool: Should You or Shouldn't You?
My buddy ACE put a pool in his backyard, and while he was all kinds of reluctant, he now views it as a great move. And as a way to not see me anymore. Hello, ACE?! How about an invite?

Keeping Fluffy McFlufferson Cool This Summer
While some owners claim their pets can talk to them, they can't say, "Yo, it's too danged hot in here even for me! And you finished with that?" Here's how to keep Fido cool.

From Laura K. Lawless, your Guide to French Language

An vs Année
The French word pairs an/année, jour/journée, matin/matinée, and soir/soirée can be confusing because each pair has a single English translation. The important thing to understand is that the difference between the words in each pair has to do with two different ways of considering time: An vs Année.

Expressions with temps
The French word temps literally means "time" or "weather" and is also used in many idiomatic expressions. Learn how to say spare time, job sharing, to pause, and more with this list of expressions with temps.
