From Allen Grove, your Guide to College Admissions: U.S.

This past Thursday, SAT scores were released for the October 1st exam. If you're wondering what your SAT scores mean for your college plans, this week's newsletter can help.

Compare SAT Data for Different Colleges

One way to figure out if your SAT scores are on target for your college plans is to compare your numbers to students who enrolled at different types of colleges. Keep in mind, however, that in all of these score charts, 25% of applicants scored below the lower number. Also, the SAT score ranges that most colleges report do not include students who were admitted because of a special talent or through an opportunity program.

The eight Ivy League schools are among the most selective colleges in the country. This doesn't mean that you need a 4.0 GPA and 2400 on the SAT to get in, although it won't hurt.

The SAT and Holistic Admissions

All of the country's most selective and prestigious colleges have holistic admissions. This means they are evaluating the whole applicant, not reducing students to simple numerical data like SAT scores. A strong academic record, meaningful extracurricular activities, glowing letters of recommendation, a compelling application essay, a strong college interview and demonstrated interest all contribute to a winning application.
