College Admissions: U.S.

Plan for College

From Allen Grove, your Guide to College Admissions: U.S.

A few early action and early decision deadlines have already passed, and many are upon us now. Make sure you know the differences between these two admission plans.

Today's newsletter also takes a look at extracurricular activities and some of the country's top engineering schools.

Early Action vs. Early Decision

Applying early will often increase your chances of getting accepted, but make sure you know the details of each college's application process. Early decision has a lot more restrictions than early action.

What Counts as an Extracurricular Activity

Students frequently write to me worried that their extracurricular involvement is a bit thin. In many cases, those applicants have failed to identify all of their activities that can count as extracurricular. Learn more.

Top Engineering Programs

The United States has many of the top engineering programs in the world. Learn about my top picks in these articles:

GPA, SAT and ACT Data for the Ivy League

The eight Ivy League schools are among the most selective colleges in the country. This doesn't mean that you need a 4.0 GPA and 2400 on the SAT to get in (although it doesn't hurt). These graphs show you the grade and score ranges for accepted and rejected students at each of the schools: Brown | Columbia | Cornell | Dartmouth | Harvard | Penn | Princeton | Yale

Behavior Management

From Jerry Webster, your Guide to Special Education
I just picked up a copy of Boy Alone by Karl Taro Greenfeld. I read it front to back non-stop. Karl Greenfeld tells the story of his family's challenges of dealing with Noah, his younger brother with fairly severe autism. Not a happy read, it still is significant in its honesty and straightforwardness.

Thank You, Karl Taro Greenfeld
I just finished reading and reviewing Boy Alone, a memoir by Karl Taro Greenfeld, the brother of Noah Greenfeld, who introduced much of the world to autism. This is a powerful story, but also a reminder of the importance of assistive communication as a means to build language.

Boy Alone - a Review
Here is the review. If you work with children with Autism, you need to purchase this book!
