How Should You Arrange Your Student Desks This School Year?
Did you ever stop to consider that every choice we make in our classrooms sends a nonverbal message about our educational philosophy and what we expect from our students? It's somewhat intimidating, but true.

So in the coming school year, consider the wide variety of ways you can arrange your classroom furniture so that your room is organized and on-message. Personally, I tend to start out with the students seated in cooperative clusters. But if they end up being a chatty bunch, then I make the switch to rows in order to discourage unnecessary talking.

Sixth Graders and Cyberbullying
I never imagined I'd be writing about cyberbullying on a site dedicated to K-6 students. But I recently read about a disturbing incident of electronic bullying involving sixth graders, and I guess I wouldn't be surprised to find out that even younger students are falling victim to this modern problem.

As adults in our students' lives, we teachers must be increasingly sensitive to the ways children can be harmed in the virtual landscape of online communications. It's no longer just punches on the playground that can cause lasting harm to a young student's fragile view of the world.
