One of the critical tasks in the first week is to find what each student likes to do or to have, what we call preferred activities of preferred objects. Some students love attention, and some students will respond to physical stimulation. I had one student who worked for tickles. This week I offer this and other strategies I use to start a school year.

What I Do - Reinforcement
Once routines are in place, I find I need to find out what preferred activities or objects are reinforcing for each student. When that is done, I like to create visual schedules to help structure individual students work flow.

Tip a Week
My predecessor started offering "Tip of the Week" and didn't follow through. I'm going to start offering you tips that you will be able to find in their own category.
