About Today: What to Pack for Summer Camp

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
The first time I ever packed for summer camp, I think I packed about 30 rolls of unicorn stickers, my jelly sandals, and some Mad Libs. Fortunately, my Mom "checked in" on my packing, and added such non-essential items as underpants and bug spray. (Moms, amirite?)

What to Pack for Summer Camp
I needed this list desperately. Even with Mom's intervention, I think we had to burn my socks when I got home. Turns out, you need more socks than you think.

How Did You Prepare Your Child for Sleepaway Camp?
Getting ready for sleepaway camp was a less hilarious, more grueling experience. I think my mother still has nightmares about me asking how long it would take her to drive to my camp and bring me my blankie, if it turned out I needed it after all.

How to Prevent Homesickness
My Mom's trick: Pack the blankie after all, but put in the lining of the suitcase so no one else would know.

Cut the Cost of Summer Camp
This is a big one: How to send the kids to camp without dipping into their college fund?

Student Discipline

From Beth Lewis, your Guide to Elementary Education
Everyone can relate to the anxiety that comes along with hunting for a job. With state budgets currently so tight, it requires additional fortitude and diligence in order to find a classroom to call your own. I'm wishing you all the best, teachers. ~Beth

Are You Interviewing for a Teaching Job This Summer?
In my experience, feeling prepared is the best thing job hunters can do in order to increase their confidence and effectiveness during job interviews. That's why I would like to offer you this list of the most commonly asked interview questions for teachers.

I compiled this list for my own personal use when I was looking to be hired for my very first teaching job. Preparing my answers to these common questions helped soothe my nerves and lessened some of my anxiety. I hope it does the same for you.

Would You Teach Engineering to Kindergarteners?
A group of New York teachers are. I recently read about an elementary school where all of the students (even the kindergarteners!) are learning about and applying engineering skills. They're even combining literature and engineering by studying the houses of the Three Little Pigs.

This started me thinking about innovative ways I can combine subject matter for my students, while wondering what nontraditional, abstract concepts might they actually be ready to learn...?... Read more

"The Essential 55" Revisited
Even though Ron Clark's book The Essential 55 is several years old now, I contend that the concepts are still effective, interesting, and relevant for all teachers. If you're unfamiliar with the book's approach to classroom management, here's an overview of The Essential 55 and how you can implement it in your own K-6 classroom.

Sometimes I find myself complaining about young people's lack of manners and sense of responsibility nowadays. I think the Essential 55 addresses some of the forgotten rules of society and reintroduces them to students in a way that can be fun and memorable, too.... Read more

About Today: Plan Your Fourth of July Party

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
It happened again. The Fourth of July just plain snuck up on me. Now it's the 29th of June and I need to figure out where to watch the fireworks and with whom. Also, what we'll be eating and so on.

Plan Your Fourth of July Party
The obvious solution is to plan my own Fourth of July party. This is a good time to tell you about my theory that people wait til the last minute to plan holiday parties, because we're all actually engaged in a giant game of party chicken. The person who can't stand it any longer is the one who finally throws the bash.

Menu for a Classic Fourth of July Barbecue
I defy you to read this menu and not get hungry. It reads like a list of awesome food. I forgot there was a theme for a minute, because I was too busy figuring out why I'm not eating ribs and corn on the cob right now.

Red, White, and Blue Recipes
If I were to throw a Fourth of July party, I would definitely insist that the food be red, white, and blue only. People would be totally free to have either lobster with red wine risotto or cupcakes with flags on them.

Healthy Fourth of July Food for Kids
When I think about what we ate at holiday parties when I was growing up, I'm amazed that any of us are still alive. I distinctly remember eating spoonfuls of butter as if it were ice cream. You might want to start your kids on a healthier path a bit earlier.

From Deb Peterson, your Guide to Continuing Education
You can find some really great research paper data at data.gov, and the information is growing daily. Search three current catalogs of data: raw, tools, and geodata. From police stats to insurance estimates and land use, you'll find more data than you can possibly use. Need to know about oceans and estuaries, population, health and nutrition, transportation, the EPA? Start at data.gov.
