This week I'm starting Technique 38, Strong Voice. It will take two weeks to do the subject justice, so I hope you will enjoy this first one. I also wrote a little belated tribute to Dr. O Ivar Lovaas, whose research taught us something important about behavior management: Punishment doesn't work!

Teach Like a Champion - Technique 38 part One
This week's technique is pivotal for success as a teacher: Strong Voice. When a teacher uses strong voice, he or she clearly establishes him or herself as the authority, the one in charge. This week we look at the five principals of strong voice. Next week we will look further.

When Dr. O Ivar Lovaas passed away last August, he left not only a legacy for the Autism community, but for all of us who work with challenging children. Early in treating children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, his clinic used aversive therapies, including pinching, slapping and electric shock. What did he learn? Punishment doesn't work.
