From Melissa Kelly, your Guide to Secondary Education
There has been some question recently about how valid the theory of multiple intelligences truly is. However, teachers can attest to the fact that children do have different strengths and weaknesses in their learning styles. This week I focus on the multiple intelligences and learning styles.

Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences
Howard Gardner proposed a theory in 1983 that opposed the traditional idea that standard IQ exams gave an accurate picture of a student's abilities. Instead, he proposed that different individuals can and do excel in different areas. These idea of multiple intelligences expanded the way that educators looked at individual students strengths and weaknesses.

Learning Styles
Students, in fact all individuals, are most effective when they are taught in their personal learning style. In fact, there are three major types of learners: visual, auditory, and tactile/kinesthetic. While most individuals without disabilities can learn using any one of these styles, most people have one for which they show a stronger affinity.
