100th Day of School Activities
Do you count the schooldays with your students each year? I always do, leading up a special numerical celebration on the 100th day of school.

But this year, I've switched it up and am focusing on the 111th day of the school year, as a little nod to the year 2011. Truth be told, eleven is my favorite number and there are so many fun things you can do with the number one.

How Do You Prepare for a Substitute?

Journal Writing Tools
Journal writing is a key part of Language Arts instruction in the elementary classroom. It can be as simple as a writing prompt each day. But I contend it's important to put a little extra thought into how you design your journal writing program. You can get a lot more bang for your buck that way.

Specifically, it's a good idea to assess student writing on a regular basis and hold the students accountable for striving towards certain standards. I use a checklist that gives students a framework for assessing and reflecting upon their journal writing.
