The education crisis is getting a ton of media attention right now. Is it for real or overblown? I think the truth lies somewhere in between. ~Beth

Is the Education Crisis "Overblown"?
Everyone's talking about the new documentary Waiting for Superman because it was on Oprah and because we all know that many aspects of the public education system are broken. But a commentary piece in The New Yorker wonders if perhaps the magnitude of the education crisis is being inflated through the current discussion of charter schools, tenure, and the power of unions (among many other issues).

The author Nicholas Lemann wonders why the rhetoric is so urgent and impassioned right now when many of the problems have been around for decades, if not a century. Additionally, if you look at the big picture, he argues, many more Americans are educated to higher levels now than in past generations. Perhaps the problems aren't getting worse, after all...?

What are your thoughts on the topic? Are you getting riled up by the current waves of debate? Or letting it all wash right over you?... Read more

Combining Weekly Parent Communication with Guided Writing Lessons
"Killing two birds with one stone" is such a cliche, but it's a must-do for teachers. We have so many tasks to do each week with so many people depending on us and yet... so little time. That's why I recommend turning your weekly (or semiweekly) parent newsletter into a whole class guided writing activity. That way, your students are learning how to reflect on the past week's accomplishments and communicate their ideas to their collective parents. At the same time, the parents will appreciate being kept in-the-loop on the classroom goings-on. Why should you toil over the keyboard in isolation? Make the newsletter a fun Language Arts activity and everybody wins!

How do you communicate with your students' parents each week?... Read more
