I was a little surprised to find that I couldn't used dry beans for a fine motor activity. I was told we couldn't use food. Period. No beans, no uncooked rice (another favorite.) I have five pounds of beans in a plastic shoe box at home: it's only forbidden in early childhood programs, so I can probably use it with my middle school students if I have any low functioning kids. Still, can we lighten up?

The Food Fight Goes On
Giving advice to a new teacher working with aggressive autistic students, I realized there was one piece of advice I could not give: use edible reinforcers. I know giving kids food can be an easy way to shut them up, but I also know that preferred food items work to modify really challenging behavior, and can be scaffolded to social reinforcement. Can you cut us a little slack, food police?
