About Today: How to Make Chocolate Eggs

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
When I was a kid, my grandmother could do the best magic trick I'd ever seen. She'd take a bunch of raw ingredients - butter, sugar, baker's chocolate and so on - and make it into candy. This, to me, was loads better than pulling rabbits out of hats.

How to Make Double Chocolate Eggs
Look at these double chocolate eggs, for example, and tell me you'd rather have a rabbit. You wouldn't.

How to Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Eggs
These are my favorites. I think vegetables should taste like chocolate peanut butter candy. I would be the healthiest person on earth.

How to Make Sugar Easter Eggs
These eggs are delicious, pretty, and they have toys inside. They're essentially edible versions of those little dioramas you used to make in school.

How to Make Coconut Easter Eggs
Sweetened coconut + cream cheese = three dozen adorable tiny white eggs.

About Today: Is Your Cat the Craziest?

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
My Aunt Cheryl will tell anyone who asks that her cat Pumpkin chose her, and not the other way around. You know that game where you tap someone on the shoulder and then act innocent as soon as they turn around? Pumpkin did that to her when she visited the pound to pick out a cat.

Adopting a Cat From a Shelter
Pumpkin reached out his paw from between the bars of his cage, patted my aunt's shoulder, and then snaked his paw back in. I picture him whistling afterward. My aunt fell in love immediately.

Profile of Mixed Breed Cats
It must be said that this was a rare incident of cunning on Pumpkin's part, never to be repeated again. Mixed breed cats might be known for their hardiness, but Pumpkin didn't inherit much in the way of brains.

Tell Us About Your Cat
For example, I once saw him climb into a paper bag, decide it was night time, and go to sleep. Even the dog was horrified at that.

Cat Breeds A to Z
All the kittehs you can handle, from Abyssinian to, well, Turkish Van.

Teaching 101

Student Discipline

From Beth Lewis, your Guide to Elementary Education
What's your favorite anytime, off-the-cuff learning activity? Besides Bingo, I've also come to like playing Whiteboard Boggle and impromptu Spelling Bees. But I'm always in the market for more easy ideas that I can share with my students. Leave a comment! ~Beth

Bingo in My Back Pocket
I imagine all teachers have a few easy, breezy, no-prep, all-purpose lessons stowed away in their proverbial back pockets. One of my favorite "go-to" activities is Bingo because it can be used to review material in virtually every subject area. Disguised as a game, Bingo helps my students review facts and figures they need to memorize.

Best of all, I can organize and implement a Bingo game at the drop of a hat - no planning necessary. Perfect for those afternoons where you unexpectedly have 20 minutes to pass before it's time to go home.... Read more

How to Help an Extremely Messy Student
It seems like every year there's one student in my class who stands out as, shall we say, "organizationally challenged." Over the years, I've developed a few strategies for helping extremely messy students create a bit order out of the chaos when the standard organizational tools just aren't enough.

How do you turn your little Pig-Pens into neatniks? I'm always in need of more tools in this area... sometimes even for my own desk!g... Read more

One National Curriculum - Is It Possible?
In her recent Op-Ed piece, One Classroom, From Sea to Shining Sea, Susan Jacoby expresses regret that a single national curriculum is not realistically possible. However, she does have three key changes she'd like to see in the American educational system:
  1. Non-compulsory guidelines (for every academic topic) developed by the brightest minds in each field
  2. An increased national investment in quality teacher selection and training (rather than penalizing ineffective teachers after they fail)
  3. The promotion of competition between schools, particularly through the support of semi-private charter schools
Any thoughts on the matter? I liked this Op-Ed piece because it took a broad view of the subject, yet offered specific ideals for educational reform.... Read more
