About Today: How to Buy a Hat for the Kentucky Derby

About.com

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
This Saturday is Derby Day, which means that I will drag everyone I can find to a local watering hole, plunk giant hats on their heads, and force them to watch horse racing while drinking mint juleps.

Kentucky Derby Hat Buying Guide
If this doesn't sound like a good time to you, you are either a poor sport ... or haven't yet found the right hat. I will give you a hint: The bigger, the better.

How to Make a Mean Mint Julep
I would like to construct a hat with mint juleps on it, perhaps affixed to straws like those beer helmets people wear to baseball games. ONLY SO MUCH MORE ELEGANT.

Kentucky Derby Contenders
There is also a horse race today, although in the confusion of hats and beverages, one could forgive you for forgetting that.

Kentucky Derby Visitor's Guide
Unless, of course, you're lucky enough to be in Louisville today, and then you'll hear more about horses in the next 24 hours than you did during the whole of your life previously. (This goes for horse people as well as for newbies.)

About Today: What NOT to Buy Mom for Mother's Day

If you can't see this email, click here

About.com

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
When I was five, I saved up my allowance, and bought my mother the most beautiful locket ever. It weighed approximately five pounds and turned her neck bright green, but of course she didn't care because anything your five-year-old gives you is perfect.

10 Priceless Gifts Mom Really Wants
Now, however, I am taller and more employed, so the stakes are higher. (By the way, Mom, if you're still reading, now's the time to stop.)

What NOT to Buy Mom for Mother's Day
As our Guide points out: "At some point, all of the gold-tone lockets and faux sterling bracelets start to pile up in Mom's drawers. She may feel obligated to wear these sentimental pieces for your sake, but what she'd really like is something that fits in better with her signature style."

6 Low-Cost - But Not Cheap! - Mother's Day Gifts
This year's been so tough, that many of you are probably looking back fondly on the days when you got allowances. But even if your budget is tight, you can still get your Mom something she'll adore.

Homemade Mother's Day Gifts She'll Love
Of course, if you want to get totally old skool about it, you can make your Mom a gift. These ideas are guaranteed not to sprain your wallet or her neck.

About Today: How to Tip Anyone Anywhere

If you can't see this email, click here

    About.com

From Jen Hubley, your About Today Editor
My sister is coming to visit me this weekend, which means that we'll be renewing our age-old argument about tipping in restaurants all across town. My sister is a generous tipper, albeit one who uses a calculator and figures out the 20 percent tip exactly. I am like Elvis giving away Cadillacs.

Tipping Guide for Restaurants Around the World
I'm not trying to impress anyone. I'm just terrified that I'll accidentally short-change someone, and suffer bad tipping karma.

How Much Do You Tip at Restaurants?
Part of my problem is that I spent many, many years as a wait staff professional, and I remember well how much a better-than-average tip made my day.

How Much to Tip a Stylist
And the rest of my problem is that I'm totally sure people will spit in my soup, lose my belongings, or buzz-cut one half of my head if I don't tip well.

Video: When to Tip ... and When Not to Tip
The fact that I've never, to my knowledge, been punished by anyone for failing to leave the expected gratuity is nearly beside the point. Although, come to think of it, my lunch did taste a little strange.
